PDF will not open in your browser? Check the file, access and viewer
A blank PDF panel does not always mean the PDF is damaged. The link may have expired, the download may be incomplete or that viewer may struggle with the document. Keep the original intact and compare one thing at a time.
Start with the safe checks ↓THE QUICK ANSWER
Here’s the short version.
Download a fresh authorised copy and open it in another trusted local viewer. If one file fails everywhere, ask the sender for a new export. If every PDF fails in one browser, inspect its PDF settings and extensions instead.
LET’S DO THIS
Work through these checks
Check the source and access
Open the document from the original trusted service. Sign in if required. An expired private link may show an error page instead of a PDF; do not rename an error download to .pdf and expect it to become a document.
Wait for the complete download
Use the browser Downloads list to confirm completion. If it failed, address the recorded error first. Save a fresh copy under a clear name rather than repeatedly opening an unfinished temporary item.
Compare a local viewer
Open the saved copy in an installed trusted PDF reader or another up-to-date browser. Check several pages. A working second viewer points towards a rendering or configuration difference, not necessarily a broken source file.
Review browser PDF behaviour
Chrome’s PDF setting is available at chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments. Firefox includes its own viewer. If PDFs open externally rather than inline, inspect your intended setting instead of assuming the document has disappeared.
Ask for a clean replacement
If this document fails in multiple viewers, ask its owner to export it again and confirm the expected page count. If it is encrypted, use the authorised password or ask the sender; do not upload it to a password-bypass service.
Compare one document with one known-good file
A harmless known-good PDF helps answer whether the issue is specific to one document. If it opens while the new attachment does not, investigate the attachment and its access path. If both fail in one browser but work in another viewer, investigate that browser’s configuration.
Do not use a confidential contract as your test upload on unfamiliar repair sites. A local comparison gives you useful evidence without creating a new copy on a third-party service. You can report that two viewers failed without handing support the document contents.
Rendered correctly is more than “something appeared”
Look at the first page, a page in the middle and the final page. Check small text, unusual symbols and any fields you intend to complete. A page can render while a font substitution or missing layer makes important content unreadable.
Forms and complex PDFs do not behave identically in every viewer. If the sender specifies a supported application, follow that requirement. Downloading through a browser is not a guarantee that every interactive feature will work in its preview.
Keep originals and private access separate
Name the source copy clearly before creating a repaired or re-exported version. Do not overwrite a signed final document to make it easier to view; changes can affect evidence and document integrity. Ask the issuer for a suitable readable copy when necessary.
In a support screenshot, redact recipient links and document names unless required. A signing link is a capability, not an ordinary public article URL. Share it only with the intended person, and use the service’s correction or resend action rather than circulating it widely.
THE THINGS PEOPLE ASK
Common questions
Is a blank preview proof the PDF is corrupt?
No. Compare a fresh authorised download in another trusted viewer before reaching that conclusion.
Can changing the extension repair it?
No. Renaming a file does not turn an error page or incomplete download into a valid PDF.

YOUR NEXT MOVE
Still stuck? Narrow it down.
Note the exact error, what changed before it started, and which checks worked. That makes the next support conversation much more useful.
