Chrome or Edge running slowly? Test tabs, extensions and the network
Slow scrolling, slow page loads and slow downloads are different symptoms. Start by describing which one happens. Then use a small comparison to decide whether the browser, one website or the network deserves attention.
Start with the safe checks ↓THE QUICK ANSWER
Here’s the short version.
Save work, update the browser and compare a small set of familiar tabs. Temporarily disable a suspect optional extension and use the browser’s performance tools. Do not erase all browsing data or turn off safe-browsing protections as a default fix.
LET’S DO THIS
Work through these checks
Separate waiting from stuttering
Does the page take ages to arrive, or does an already loaded page scroll poorly? Try a second trusted site. A single slow service is different from every tab becoming unresponsive.
Restart with fewer tabs
Save drafts and downloads first. Close tabs you do not need and restart the browser. Repeat the original task with a small, comparable workload. An improvement suggests that resource pressure or one active tab deserves investigation.
Check the browser’s update screen
Use Chrome’s or Edge’s About page in Settings and complete any offered update/relaunch. Download updates through the browser or its official provider, not through a website popup claiming your browser is out of date.
Inspect optional extensions
Open the extensions manager and temporarily disable one nonessential suspect. Retest before changing the next one. Do not remove required organisation tools or a security extension just because a random guide calls every extension “bloat”.
Use supported performance controls
Chrome provides Performance settings; Edge offers a performance view and sleeping-tab controls. Keep active workspaces exempt where appropriate. Test whether a change helps your real task rather than treating a lower memory number as success by itself.
Choose a comparison that answers one question
If the same page loads quickly on another device using the same network, investigate this computer or browser. If it is slow everywhere while unrelated sites are fine, the service itself may be struggling. Avoid comparing a heavy video editor with a simple search page and calling the result a browser benchmark.
A separate browser profile can help isolate profile-specific settings, but it is not identical to your normal session. Extensions, sign-in state and cached content may differ. Treat the result as a clue, not proof that one browser brand is universally faster.
Keep live tasks alive
Memory-saving features are useful for idle tabs, but a document upload, recording or paired phone session is not idle work. If a site stops when it sleeps, check the browser’s exception options and keep the task visible. Never assume an unsaved browser gallery is a cloud backup.
Before a long capture, close unrelated heavy tasks and check that the computer has enough free storage for the final download. Do not repeatedly click a slow action: you may queue duplicate uploads or exports while the first one is still working.
Do not clear everything without a reason
Removing all cookies can sign you out and discard site-specific state. Removing saved passwords does not make ordinary pages render faster. If evidence points to one site’s stale data, understand what clearing that site will remove and protect unfinished work first.
Keep a brief record of the page, browser version and which comparison helped. For recurring stalls on every application, use the Windows slowdown guide. For downloads alone, inspect the download error and network rather than repeatedly clearing the browser cache.
THE THINGS PEOPLE ASK
Common questions
Should I clear every cookie to speed up Chrome?
Not by default. It can sign you out and remove useful site state. Use a specific diagnosis and protect drafts before clearing data.
Can sleeping tabs interrupt a phone session?
A live browser task needs to remain active. Check your browser’s site exceptions if memory-saving behaviour interferes with that workspace.

Still stuck? Narrow it down.
Note the exact error, what changed before it started, and which checks worked. That makes the next support conversation much more useful.
